Chilean coach develops in Italy & UK

Mario Alegria Barrientos, Lead Facilitator at Los Lobos Rugby Club in Puerto Montt, Chile spent 3 weeks developing in Italy and in the UK. Mario spent time having conversations, watching sessions and coaching in organisations in the north of Italy, London, Northampton and Scotland.

Roberto Marchiori, Head of Youth Development welcomed Mario at Biella Rugby, Italy.

Juan visits Zagreb, Croatia

A truly fantastic weekend supporting coaches in their environments.

The weekend saw around 25 coaches and 70 12 to 18 years old children trying to achieve a common outcome, getting better! Coaches bought very quickly in to the idea of trying to create the best child-centred, learning and developing environments for everyone. By Sunday, players were empowered and challenged why their were doing what they were doing!

A number of volunteers work endlessly to make bring the weekend to life. Children and coaches travelled from Split and Brach in Croatia as well as Ljubljana in Slovenia. Unfortunately the current world wide situation put a stop to a number of coaches and players travelling from Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia.

Thank you so much to Mladost Rugby Club and City of Zagreb for making the weekend possible and for all the hard work they put into it.

The long term development programme will continue to volunteer and professionals coaches during 2020 and 2021.

Juan, Fletch and Rusty return to Malaysia & Singapore

Fantastic few days with some familiar faces and a new approach intending to affect behaviour at a rugby tournament with over 200 coaches!

Rusty didn't get the memo...

Discussing session design at Malborough College Malaysia, Johor.

We had the pleasure of spending time with the pupils and coaches at basketball, S&C, swimming, touch rugby and rugby sessions.

Fletch decided to bring a waterproof and some spare trainers to our session at Tanglin Rugby Club in Singapore. It was a full-on evening with Fletch coaching the U9 boys, Rusty leading the U10 boys and Juan facilitating the U18 girls, followed by a 2 hours forum with coaches around gamification.

Great meeting with the Singapore Rugby Union discussing the future and how Sudamerica Coaching and Magic Academy could support their ongoing development.

At the Centaurs international Minis & Youth Rugby Tournament 2019, we persuaded the children to go and challenge their coaches. Guess what most of them went for!? A silent touch line where they were allowed to play without having the adults constantly yelling instructions at them and getting frustrated... surprise, surprise.

We also spent time with teams proposing different ways to measure their experiences throughout the weekend.

The headbands revolution has arrived to Asia...

“This feels quite weird but weird is good and it usually means change”. “This makes perfect sense; Why haven’t we been doing this?”. “I love the fact that everything is about their learning and not the coaches’ role”. “Straight into play, get them going, they just want to play”. “You guys have made an impact and I am sure we will see our coaches implementing loads of these stuff as from tomorrow”. All of the above quotes are from coaches, teachers and decisions makers within the organisations we have had the pleasure of spending time with (and getting spoiled by!).

The concept of bringing new ideas to an alien environment tends to usually mean some resistance, disagreements or simply a feeling of ‘thats all good, however…’ During the last few days we have experienced nothing like it! Professional educators and coaches, parents and volunteers have welcomed us with open open arms and I am leaving with the sensation of seeing loads of light bulbs going off. It has been quite obvious, that the people in charge of the children experiences and learning environments around here have had the ‘this isn’t quite right, there must be another way’ thought at the back of their minds for some time and that’s where Magic Academy and Sudamerica Coaching can potentially help out.

My take aways have been loads however some that come in to my head right now…

The importance of developing coaches for the future game;
Volunteers are passionated no doubt, however they need some tools and support;
Ditch the drills, yes completely, no buts, just don’t do any more;
Make people feel welcomed and cared for…
Never impose
